Anatomy of the Perfect Portrait Blog Post


One great way to get more leads to your website is through blog posts. People are more apt to want to read an article or story then to simply “check out your website.”

So what makes a compelling blog post? Blogging takes time, how do you know how to create content that people actually want to read?

In this article I dive into my almost 10 years experience as a photographer and entrepreneur to go into detail about, what I call, the “perfect portrait blog post.

So let’s get started.

title1) Compelling Title:

The title of your blog post is what is going to bring people to the post. Without a good title nobody will even give your article a chance. This part is super important and simply can not be overlooked.

Your title needs to address the benefit of the article for the reader as quickly and as attention grabbing-ly (yeah because that’s a word lol) as possible.

Bad Title Example: A’s Boudoir Photo Shoot

Good Title Example: Why a Busy Mom of 3 Cleared Her Schedule for a Lingerie Photo Shoot

boudieshortsbeforeandafter2) Interesting Content, Tell a Story

Every single one of your clients has an amazing story to share. It’s your job to get to know them through your questionnaire, emails, pre-consult (if you do one), and before shoot time in the makeup chair (which is the time I use to get to know them).

Get to know deep down the real reason why they’re doing a boudoir photo shoot. Is it for their significant other? For themselves? Are they celebrating a victory of some kind?

With your clients permission you can tell their story on your blog which will make for far more interesting content, get more clicks to your site, and of course that means more bookings!

Be sure to showcase a before/after photo in your blog post along with their story and some of the boudoir images from their session.

photoshowcase3) Gorgeous Photos (less is more)

When selecting the images to go into the blog post you need to consider a few things. First, I would recommend you only use images from the selection of images the client has purchased at their viewing/ordering session. This will combat clients getting shoots with you and then just taking the images from your blog, it can hurt your sales.

Second be sure to choose images that go along well with your content. If you’re telling a story of the journey at the studio maybe include images from in/around your studio/shoot location as well.

Lastly, less is more. Think about the last time you clicked off of social media to read an article. Did you read every single word and paw over every single image? Most likely no. Most likely you skimmed. We’re people of a fast paced life who want to open the article and get out of it what the title says we’ll get as soon as possible.

calltoaction4) Call to Action

Your article should end with a call to action. It would be pointless for you for somebody to click on your article, read your article, click out, and then never return to your site. You need to be capturing these interested leads and converting them into customers.

Aside from having a pop up opt in to capture leads for your email list let’s focus on your call to action for the bottom of your blog post.

Let’s say your blog post was called, “Why a Busy Mom of 3 Cleared Her Schedule for a Lingerie Photo Shoot.”

The type of reader that is going to click on that article is mostly likely also going to be a busy mom. You want to make sure your call to action appeals to your reader.

So, at the end of the article you could have a question that says “Are you a busy mom considering a boudoir shoot? Click Here to get in touch” and send them to your contact page.

You could either send them to your contact page or have them opt into your email newsletter.
