How To Get Started As A Portrait Photographer

I wanted to talk to you guys about how to get started as a portrait photographer.

Now, really what I had to do to think about what are my best tips for you guys is just really think about, how did I get started as a portrait photographer? And the answer is, photographing friends and family.

So, I photographed friends and family until I felt very, very confident in my skill set, and also built up a portfolio of work so that people would actually want to book and pay me to take their pictures.

And then what I did was, once I had that portfolio, I started marketing. So, I would spread the word. I would say on Facebook, “Tell all your friends and family I have a photography business now, I’m running a special. If you book a shoot in the next 24 hours, you’re gonna get a $99 photo shoot with a $100 credit towards the package that you choose.” Something like that.

It comes down to just photographing friends and family. Doing a great job with that. Becoming confident in your skill set. Building a portfolio. Then, Put up your website, announce it on Facebook, just get the word out there, and that’s truly how you get started as a portrait photographer and that’s exactly how I did it.
