How Lindsey Van Roy Increased Her Bookings and Went Full Time with Boudoir Photography with Boudoir Certified

Sarah Sobon: Hi I’m Sarah Sobon, results coach for Boudoir Certified, and I’m interviewing one of our students from Boudoir Certified, Lindsey Van Roy.

Lindsey Van Roy: Hi.

Sarah Sobon: So Lindsey, what is the name of your photography business?

Lindsey Van Roy: So my boudoir photography business is Hello Beautiful Boudoir. And it was Lindsey Van Roy Photography, but I transitioned it over.

Sarah Sobon: I like that. And where are you located?

Lindsey Van Roy: I’m located in Kimberly, Wisconsin.

Sarah Sobon: And you’re close to …

Lindsey Van Roy: I’m close to Appleton. So that’s probably the major city, it’s kind of close to Green Bay, and Milwaukee is about an hour and a half away.

Sarah Sobon: Perfect. So what made you want to shoot boudoir photography?

Lindsey Van Roy: Well being really honest here, I didn’t know how, really how much I would love doing this. So the story goes kind of like this: I was a wedding photographer, and I did mini-sessions, I did every kind of photography, babies, you name it. And well, my bank account was empty. And I was in panic mode, and I was like, “I have to make some money really fast here.” Because I have five children, so that’s a big deal, you know, when your bank account’s literally on $1.32 or something like that.

So I had purchased, before Molly launched the Boudoir Certified, I had purchased just her Model Call program. And I had remembered, oh that’s right, I bought that Model Call thing, I’m finally going to look into it. So I finally had time, and I thought, you know, I’m going to see if this works.

Well it worked, and I was blown away by the success of the Model Call. So I didn’t follow it to a T, but I followed it really dang close, that I’ll give it credit for having been very successful. And then I have these women in, and they’re crying, and they’re looking at their images, and I’m like, “Wow, I mean this is really powerful.” So that’s what really got me gung-ho on boudoir was that women are, like it changed their perspective on themselves, on everything, and it was so empowering for me, and it was empowering for them. And then I just fell in love with it, and now it’s all I do is boudoir, and I just love it.

Sarah Sobon: Oh I love that.

Lindsey Van Roy: Yeah.

Sarah Sobon: Yeah, so it sounds like –

Lindsey Van Roy: [crosstalk 00:02:24]

Sarah Sobon: So it sounds like you kind of were doing everything with your photography business. Did you notice with Model Call, were you still having issues? Is that why you started the whole program?

Lindsey Van Roy: Yeah, well, I’m kind of one of those people that if something shows, if something is, “Oh, this works,” you know, then I’m starting to get interested and I’ll listen, and I’ll be like, “Okay, maybe the other stuff she has …” because I kind of wanted to get the boudoir business to a well-oiled machine kind of thing, and so that’s why I decided to sign up for Boudoir Certified, was to see the missing pieces that I could pull into my business. Because I really wanted to be done with all the weddings, and all the other portrait stuff, once I really fell in love with this. So that’s what interested me in Boudoir Certified, is I felt like it had all those pieces for me.

Sarah Sobon: Yeah. That’s definitely, I feel like a lot of people have certain little pieces, but they also have certain little pieces of other random things. And it’s like, until it comes together in one big system, then you see the giant blow up.

Lindsey Van Roy: Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely.

Sarah Sobon: So, did you have any hesitations yourself before signing up for Certified?

Lindsey Van Roy: Yes, because even though I had that one great Model Call, my money wasn’t consistent at that point, so the price kind of scared me. You know I went on the payment plan, but I just told myself, I’m going to focus, I know if I focus and put my mind to it I can make this happen. And so I did, and I’m telling you, it wasn’t even an issue to make those payments. It was just like, I was following what I was supposed to be doing, I was doing the work and the money came in, and I still had extra money paying bills, paying for Certified, and making an actual income, still. It was so fabulous.

Sarah Sobon: That’s so awesome. Yeah, you have been killing it with the program, you joined, I can’t even remember, what month did you join?

Lindsey Van Roy: I can’t even remember either, it had to be … I really don’t remember. It’s been, let’s see, that would’ve been … my first, that Model Call I believe was last February, but I wasn’t in Certified then, so I think like April? Maybe February? April? If I’m doing that right, I don’t, I’m not clear on that, sorry Sarah.

Sarah Sobon: No, you’re fine. I could’ve looked it up too. And then did you have, did your significant other have reservations about you joining the program?

Lindsey Van Roy: Yeah, he thought I was crazy. And I’m a firm believer in mentors and stuff, but this was kind of like my thing where I was like, “Okay, I’m going to pay a lot of money,” and he thought I was crazy, I mean he looked at me and he’s like, “You’ve been a photographer for 18 years and now you’re going to go and give all this money to someone?” And blah blah blah, but I’ll tell you, he’s floored. He’s like this now. He’s like, “Oh my gosh,” yeah, because he actually, he is done working, so he doesn’t have to work, and now he’s building his business, because I can cover all the expenses and everything. So it’s been a cool trade off that way. But when he started seeing the money come in he was just like, “Okay, where else do you need to put your money Lindsey?”

Sarah Sobon: I’ll listen to whatever you say.

Lindsey Van Roy: Exactly, it was a great call and now he knows it.

Sarah Sobon: That’s awesome. So, what would you say your business is like now that you have gone through Certified and everything?

Lindsey Van Roy: It’s consistent. I have consistent bookings, I book about a month out, maybe a month and a half. A month and a half is more accurate. I shoot three to five sessions a week, I do it full time. I had a $10,000 week last week, and then on an average though, you know, my sales are anywhere between $15,000, I think I had a $23,000 month, but the sales are great, and we’re busy.

I have a makeup artist that is busy and loving it, we all just love it. So it’s just very consistent and steady, I never had that in photography before, and having that is just such a stress relief. Because you know you have income coming in, there’s no guessing, there’s just no guessing, “Oh, am I going to book up?” Now I know I’m going to, because I follow the steps, and if I follow the steps it’s working.

Sarah Sobon: Yeah. That’s great. And you were doing, my favorite is the collection, you kept selling collection three in a streak, how many were you up to?

Lindsey Van Roy: I was up to 12.

Sarah Sobon: And then you went to a collection four, right?

Lindsey Van Roy: Well then it went down one I believe, and then I went to a collection four, but then I had a collection one again, and now I had another collection three today, so that’s a positive.

Sarah Sobon: Yeah. I was like, I’m going –

Lindsey Van Roy: The streak was amazing, then I thought I had a system, and I’m like maybe I … and then I was like, nah. I should’ve never said anything, but … yeah. I mean those were incredible sales, I was just blown away by that.

Sarah Sobon: Yeah, you were just killing it with that. I feel like … oh, so what would you say to somebody that’s considering Boudoir Certified? What advice would you give?

Lindsey Van Roy: I would give the advice to go in full force. And don’t be afraid by the price of the system and the education plan, because you will make it back ten-fold. It’s so powerful, when you put all the steps in a row, and the key is though, is if you don’t do the work, the work’s not going to come to you. So you need to be a person that’s ready to say, “I’m going to make this happen by using these steps,” and I’m telling you, you are just going to be floored at the outcome when you follow what Molly tells you to do, and then you just watch it all come together, it’s incredible. So don’t be afraid, just move in, go do it. Do it, but you have to do it, you know?

Sarah Sobon: Yeah. Do the work so you get the benefit.

Lindsey Van Roy: Absolutely. You have to do the work.

Sarah Sobon: I don’t think, I feel like I asked all my questions, is there anything else you wanted to share?

Lindsey Van Roy: No, just that boudoir rocks, and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made in my life, and I’m happy. I wake up in the morning and I’m happy. And I can credit a lot of it to Boudoir Certified, because it’s helped me. And the community is awesome. Sarah, you know that, there’s a great community of people, and I’ve never been in a group there, it’s like you always have someone in your back pocket. So if there’s an issue that arises with your business, just having other experienced photographers, Molly, everyone to kind of weigh in helps so much. So I think the community is just fabulous too.
