Photographers: 3 ideas for your email newsletter

I wanted to share with you three ideas for having a good email newsletter, three ideas for what you should actually email your email list about.

The first idea that I want to share with you are client stories. Get to know your clients as you’re photographing them, and then ask them if you have permission from them to share their story online, You can obviously mask their name and all that kind of stuff, but it’s really powerful to share client stories because everyone on your list will relate to that, they will see maybe this person overcame fears to do a shoot, and they loved it, and people will relate to that, and then they will want to do a shoot themselves.

Now the second tip is to email stuff about you. Why did you become a photographer? Why do you love shooting X, Y, Z type of portraits, or Boudoir photography, or whatever it is that you do? What’s your favorite color? What do you like to eat? Tell them about you. Because here’s the thing, the more that people can become your friends through whatever platform it is that you’re doing: email, or Facebook, or Instagram, or whatever that is, the more that they’re going to relate to you, the more that they’re going to know, like, and trust you, and these are the three things that you need to get them to book with you.

As photographers, we like to think that people book with us by how good our work is, but work is subjective, and really what people are looking for is someone who is good at photography, but also someone that they know, like, and trust. Because if they feel comfortable with that person, if they like that person, if they trust that person, then they know that they’re going to have a good experience getting their pictures taken by you.

Now the third thing that you want to share to your email list are any kind of specials that you’re running. Now you don’t want to do this every single day, but I would say rotating between these three types of posts, maybe adding in a fourth type of post, and rotate between that. The more you can email, the better, but I would say at least start out with weekly. If you can’t do that, at least start out with monthly. Weekly is definitely better than monthly and actually, two times a week is really good as well.
